The cartoony look seems to work well, and there are several reasons for this.

There are a lot of us out there that were raised in an era when cartoons were the best form of afternoon or early weekend morning entertainment. Could it be that the popularity of these cartoony styles has something to do with that? Maybe the cartoon graphics bring back memories of good times in the past.

This type of graphic design can also be easier on the actual artist that has to create them. Creating photo realistic graphics is not always an easy thing to do, and it can easily take much longer to create them as well. They are an all around better choice for some applications.

Most of the popular social networks use them as emoticons, and they can be found all over certain online gaming sites. You get to choose a virtual avatar that represents you, and they are almost always a cartoony style.

The avatar that you have chosen will wind up being what everyone sees as you. Not only has this style become hugely popular in the online world, but it has also made it easier for people to play online games with their friends. Some games have even gone so far as to let you create your own cartoony avatar from scratch.

Imagine being able to sit down at a virtual poker table with all of your friends, and each one of you had your own cartoony avatar. It would make the game more fun, and it would also make it much easier to identify who is who. Online poker games are just one good example of where cartoony graphics are really taking over.
